Kraatz, a proud subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group of Companies, recently hosted a group of 3rd and 4th-year Civil Engineering students from the University of Namibia (UNAM) at its Walvis Bay headquarters. This initiative, in alignment with O&L’s Vision 2029 and their core values and characteristics of being authentic, caring and passionate, reflects Kraatz’s commitment to fostering local talent and caring about Namibia’s sustainable development.
The excursion provided these future engineers with invaluable practical exposure, complementing their academic studies and equipping them with a deeper understanding of the industry’s demands. The visit commenced with a warm welcome at Kraatz HQ, followed by a comprehensive safety induction to ensure that all participants could engage with the site’s operations safely and effectively.
A Hands-On Exploration of Engineering Excellence
The students embarked on a guided tour of Kraatz’s Machine Shop and Workshop, where they observed the intricacies of steel fabrication and structural engineering. Led by seasoned professionals, including Machine Shop Superintendent Simon Muunda and Workshop Superintendent John Arendse, the tour offered the students first-hand insight into the machinery, processes and skilled craftsmanship that drive Kraatz’s operations.
Following this, the group visited the Syncrolift facility, a pivotal site for Kraatz’s marine and offshore projects. Here, Project Manager Cameron Langenhoven provided an in-depth overview of the Syncrolift’s functions, including a live demonstration of vessel dry docking—a rare and exciting experience that underscored the complexity and scale of marine engineering.
Engaging with Industry Leaders
The excursion concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, facilitated by key Kraatz employees, where students engaged directly with leadership. This interactive session allowed the students to deepen their understanding of the engineering sector, explore the challenges and opportunities within the field and gain valuable career insights from experts at the forefront of Namibia’s industrial landscape.
Building Namibia’s Future through Capacity Development
This initiative exemplifies Kraatz’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry application, contributing to the development of a highly skilled workforce in Namibia. By providing these students with hands-on experience, Kraatz not only enhances their educational journey but also supports O&L’s broader mission of building a prosperous and sustainable future for the country.
Kraatz remains committed to nurturing local talent and driving innovation within Namibia’s engineering sector. This excursion is one of many ways in which the company contributes to the advancement of Namibia’s Vision 2030, aligning with the national goals of economic transformation and sustainable development.
